From the Co-publisher's Desk— Judy Umlas
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
This is an experiment. Although I tried and failed before, I am actually going to do it this time! I will finish my letter to you before you get to the “read more” link! All I will say this time is that my nightmare I shared in the last newsletter – about not getting any articles on our theme of the month, Green Project Management -- did NOT come true. In fact, there are numerous fantastic articles in this edition of allPM Today on this critical subject, of which I am very proud. And that’s all I am going to say about them. Just one more thing: Please tell me if you like it when I write less! Don’t worry, I (think) I can take it. Just let me know. And if you miss my usual, at least somewhat inspiring and slightly off the wall rambling, come visit my blog: www.thepowerofacknowledgment.com. Have a great month, and do stay in touch!
Until the next time…

From the Co-publisher's Desk - Frank P. Saladis, PMP
If you are a parent of young children or you have children who can be associated with what we have come to know as “generation X” (born somewhere between 1972 and 1978 or thereabout) or have occasionally watched an episode or two of the Muppet Show® you will be very familiar with the phrase “It isn’t easy being green” and the character associated with that phrase, Kermit the frog. His point is about being different, being a little out of the ordinary and that there are challenges associated with life when you “stand out” from the crowd.

Theme of the Month – Do Your Part by Using Green Project Management Techniques
By Tom Mochal, PMP and Andrea Krasnoff, PMP
The world is going green – even in the United States. We are collectively realizing that we do not have an unlimited amount of air or water or space to continue to utilize resources as we have done in the past. The pending concern over global warming merely serves as the central rallying point for an environmentally friendly movement that has been underway since at least the 1970s.

Ecology, Ethics and the Project manager – A Zen Perspective
By George Pitagorsky, PMP
Here it is the month in which Earth Day occurs again; so the question - “How does project management relate to ecology and environmental responsibility?” is very relevant. Let’s explore the question in light of project manager ethics and, more broadly, ethical behavior in general.

Trust Yourself to Save Energy
By Steven P. Blais, PMP
“Every project team should be on a quest to reduce the total energy cost of detecting and transferring needed ideas.”1
The rest of this issue of allPM.com discusses “green” projects and the practice of managing projects that create earth-friendly products like ecologically sound buildings and the like. I’m sure that most of us would elect earth-friendly procedures in our projects when the options are presented to us. Unfortunately in the field of project management, that option is not a common one.

Positive Leadership In Project Management – Green Leadership
By Frank P. Saladis, PMP
The word “green” is not new to project management. We often use “green” to report the status or the health of a project that is currently in good shape. Green can mean several things to project managers – everything is going well, it is OK to start, it is OK to keep moving forward, there are no obstructions etc. Green is also associated with low risk items that may be encountered during project execution.

Communications Toolbox™: When Your Project is Buried in Paper
By Laura B. Moore, PMP
I’ve been working on a project recently that includes a contractor, the material dealer, and of course, me. In this situation, I’m the homeowner. The project should not have taken more than about two months and seeing how it started in February 2008, it really should be ready to wrap up if not already be wrapped. However… it is not.

Ask Harry! The Fundamentals of Metrics Part 1: Considerations for “What” to Measure
By Harry Rever, PMP – Director of Six Sigma, IIL
In terms of business operations, as well as project management, there are often many questions around the topic of measurements; specifically “what” to measure. Financial and budgetary metrics are fairly standard and easily understood from a business management perspective. Scheduling and cost metrics are also well established for the management of projects.

Risk Doctor: Managing the Future
By Dr David Hillson, PMP, FAPM
Risk management is all about the future. Of course we are also interested in the past, to learn from what has happened before, to avoid making the same mistakes again, and to capture opportunities that we previously missed. But the main focus of risk management is looking to the future, to see what might be coming, and to get as ready as possible.
