From the Co-publisher's Desk— Judy Umlas
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
Well, about half of you said I should continue to write my “free association” long, rambling, (hopefully) interesting letters for allPM Today, and the other half said “Cut yourself off before you hit the ‘read more’ link.” So I’m going to go in between today – not too long, but a bit beyond the link. Please feel free to continue to voice your votes regarding how long my letter should be!

From the Co-publisher's Desk - Frank P. Saladis, PMP
Any one who has even a basic understanding of project management knows that project management has been around for thousands of years. Many books and articles about project management link the pyramids, ancient temples, and other structures to the use of project management principles that were in practice before the term was “modernized.” Just about everything we use in our daily lives is the result of a project. Students are assigned projects in grammar school through graduate school. Even Donald Trump assigns projects to the participants in the television show “The Apprentice.

Theme of the Month – Selling Project Management Throughout the Enterprise By Tony Kapsak, PMP and Jim Schneidmuller, PMP
The job of selling project management throughout the Enterprise is most effectively accomplished when approached internally and from multiple fronts. While the professional consulting organization can assist with the definition of what type of project management approach would be a good fit and assist in the rollout of a project management methodology, the needs and benefits of project management are best assessed from within the organization.

Becoming a Champion for Project Management By Lynn Carlson, PMP
I spent quite a few years of my career in outbound sales. The “tools and techniques” I learned there have served me well for many years in the areas of establishing rapport, negotiating requirements and timelines, presenting concepts and ideas, collaboration across varied groups, and even conflict resolution. One of my first mentors taught me that people buy for one of two reasons: Inspiration or Desperation. It’s hard to inspire people into something that they didn’t know they needed. It’s easy to provide the answer to all their problems when they are in PAIN!

Project Management is like a Bowl of Life Cereal…..Try it, you’ll like it! By Seth B. Greenwald, PMP
Remember Mikey from the Life cereal commercial of the 1970’s? He was the boy who was very reluctant to try Life cereal. Who could blame him? There was really nothing to entice a kid to try it. (Yes, I was a kid growing up in the 70’s). Let’s face it, Life cereal just wasn’t as cool as the other cereals. It had no monstrous character representing the brand like Count Dracula.

“GreenPM”: Supporting ISO 14000 Standards through Project Management Processes By Tom Mochal, PMP and Andrea Krasnoff, PMP
Since the 1990s we have seen an increasing focus on sustaining the environment. The International Organization for Standardization, www.iso.org, established ISO 14000 standards for the environmental field in 1996. Most recently revised in 2004, these standards are voluntary and global. There is an increasing number of companies becoming ISO14001 compliant. It is also common for these companies to request the same from their supply chain partners.

Risk Doctor: What Drives Risk Attitudes?
By Dr David Hillson, PMP, FAPM
It seems obvious to say that people are essential if risk is to be managed effectively. Risk management is not done by robots or machines, but by people, acting individually and in groups. One of the biggest influences over the risk process are the risk attitudes which people adopt. These affect every aspect of the risk process, even if people are unaware of it.
