During a software project, you, as the project manager, gather data from the project team and perform an Earned Value Analysis of the project. Your analysis is based on the following information:

EV: 523,000  PV: 623,000  AC: 643,000.

Your Earned value report will indicate which of the following?

  1. CV: +120,000; SV: +100,000.
  2. CV: +100,000; SV: +120,000.
  3. CV: -100,000; SV: -120,000
  4. CV: -120,000; SV: -100,000.
Answer: D

Cost various is determined by comparing the Earned Value or Budgeted Cost of Work Performed with the Actual Cost ( AC) or Actual Cost of Work Performed. In this case the actual cost is greater than the budgeted cost indicating a negative cost variance or an over budget situation.

Which of the following formulas should be used to calculate the project estimate at complete when the current variances are seen as typical and can be expected to be seen for future variances?

  1. EAC = AC C + (BAC – EV C) / CPI C

  2. ETC = BAC – EV C

  3. ETC = (BAC – EVC) / CPI C

  4. d) EAC = AC C + BAC – EV C

Answer = A. EAC or Estimate at Completion is calculated by adding two factors: the actual costs to date and the budget required to complete the remaining work. (The budget required to complete is the BAC or Budget at Complete minus the Earned Value modified by a performance factor, the CPI or cost performance index)

You are the project manager for a project team that is developing a new machine for your company. The machine will produce a specific part used to be used in the assembly of a state of the art robotics product. You are in the testing phase of the project life cycle. The control chart produced during the test indicates 8 consecutive data points above the process average but well below the UCL. How do you interpret the information on the chart?

    a) The process is in control and the next phase of testing should begin
    b) The chart indicates a run and further analysis is required
    c) The data points are within the mean and the UCL and indicate acceptable performance
    d) The process average should be re-calculated
Answer = b.  A run on a control chart indicates that some specific or special cause may be a factor in the process. A general rule for interpreting control charts is that if seven or more consecutive data points appear on the control chart a “run” has been established and an out of control situation may exist. Further analysis to determine the cause of the run is necessary.
