Present the content of the project: what has to be done to produce a successful quality product. “Here is what we have to do and how long each will take. Can you see anything we can do to shorten the time frame? Only when the manager requests a rationale or wants to know how your conclusion was calculated do you bring out the Microsoft Project artifacts.

Consider selling project management based on optimizing resources. A professional project manager following PMBOK guidelines is better able to predict when resources are going to be needed and when they will be released from the project. In this way the resources may not have to be assigned for the entire duration of the project and may be free for other organizational duties. |

Communicating Project Management Metrics Part 1 of 4
Effective utilization of project metrics can be a project managers
key to the consistent delivery of projects on-time and on-budget. Communicating
these metrics to the project team, customers and sponsors is a critical contributor
to a projects success. This must be a consideration of the project management
organization (PMO) as early in the project initiation phase as possible. Successful
communication of project metrics across the organization can be realized by
following a simple three-step plan:
1. Identify and categorize your key stakeholders and determine the metrics
that will need to be communicated to each group.
2. Develop a schedule with detail sufficient to support the generation
of metrics that have value to project stakeholders.
3. Establish a repeatable process to capture and communicate project
metrics.
This tip is the first of a four part series. This is not meant to be a comprehensive
strategy but just some quick tips to get you started in utilizing project metrics
to enhance your overall communication strategy. Hopefully it will be of help
for your current or next project. Please check the Tip of the Day section
of the ALLPM.com website tomorrow for part two of the series.

Tip of the day:
Establish an environment where reporting bad news in a timely manner is encouraged rather than an environment where fear prevents the flow of critical information.
